The National - Trouble Will Find Me
While I have trouble with taking my opinions with a grain of salt because of recency bias, I can't evade the feeling that this album still may become one of my favorites of all time. The soft instruments gently push you out on the waves of the lyrical emotional storm. It's really incredible how the quality doesn't drop at all with each song, it keeps getting better and sadder as it goes on. You'll end up with your face in the pillow, mourning a lost love and reminiscing about that one night you both spent under the stars. While melancholy is oozing out of this record, it's not really the ants-from-up-there-soul-crushing type. I'd say coldly comforting would be a better adjective. Like falling asleep under warm colored led lights after crying your heart out into a pillow. With all that being said, The National don't forget that they're a rock band, the sadness has an undeniable catchiness to it; I think some of these lyrics will be repeated by me, while making coffee on a sunday morning 50 years from now. It's quite suprising that an album this "simple" can be so great. It proves that music doesn't need to have fireworks and grandness in it to be outstanding.
